Over the past few years, the Institute of Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics has produced a series of films on various themes within the general area of rheology. They have been sold, singly on CD, on a non-profit making basis for £65 each.
The films have now been edited in order to create a single DVD containing all five films, and this is available from the INNFM for £140 (inclusive of packing & postage). Although some minor changes have been made to the general layout and graphics, most of the original material has been kept. The five films are 'Non-Newtonian Fluids', 'History of Rheology', 'Boger Fluids', 'Complex Fluids in Complex Flows (Extravagant Effects)' and 'Yield Stress'. We consider the material to be suitable as a general background for newcomers to the field.

Non-Newtonian Fluids: This film introduces the viewer to the basic science of rheology. Various interesting rheological phenomena are highlighted, typically as they arise in everyday situations. The topics covered include:
Introduction to Rheology • Viscometry • Rheometry • Normal Stress Effects • Extensional Flow • Other Rheological Effects (including Thixotropy and Antithixotropy, Sharkskin and Melt Fracture)
History of Rheology: This film introduces the viewer to the history of this fascinating scientific field, placing developments into context through its many contributors. Various scientific breakthroughs are highlighted, with the material covering the following topics:
• Introduction • Some Highlights • Controversies • Friends and Disputes • International Meetings • Lessons from History.
Boger Fluids: This presentation deals with the special class of non-Newtonian fluids named after Professor David Boger, who first brought them to the attention of rheologists. Extensive features include high-quality computer graphics and experimental sequences. The presentation introduces the viewer to developments in the field, highlighting the various scientific breakthroughs. The film covers the following topics:
• Introduction • History of Boger Fluids • Rheometry • Contraction Flows • Other Phenomena • Constitutive Models for Boger Fluids • Computational Rheology.
Complex Fluids in Complex Flows (Extravagant Effects): This presentation deals in particular with the extravagant phenomena observed in complex flows of highly-elastic non-Newtonian fluids. Extensive features include high-quality computer graphics and experimental sequences. The presentation introduces the viewer to the developments in the field, highlighting the various scientific breakthroughs. It covers the following topics:
• Introduction • Swirling • Splashing • Jets and filaments • Instabilities.
Yield Stress: This film introduces the viewer to developments concerning this class of materials, highlighting the various scientific breakthroughs and covering:
• Introduction • History • Examples of yield stress behaviour • Controversies • Some generally accepted conclusions concerning the Yield Stress • Conclusions.
